P - Posture

P is for Posture.

Parkinsons affects automatic movements like the brain’s reminder to stand up straight. It is therefore common to develop a stooped posture as the disease progresses. As a young person with Parkinsons this is something I am particularly worried about as it is something very visible to others and something that’s associated with old age. 👵🏼

I try to be aware of my posture but it is easy to forget. Poor posture can lead to other problems like loss of flexibility, loss of balance and falls, back and neck pain, weaker muscles etc. While cardio exercise is known to be the best to slow progression of the disease, I believe that other types of exercises are equally important to address specific symptoms like posture and balance. I find that pilates and yoga can be very helpful to work on posture and strengthen the right muscles to maintain it.

Good posture is important for everyone, and it is always a good idea to remind yourself to stand up tall and sit properly too. 🚶🏻‍♀️🧘🏻‍♀️
