Insomnia
More than 30% of people with parkinsons experience insomnia - either sleep-onset insomnia (primary insomnia) or sleep fragmentation (secondary insomnia). PD medication can also contribute to insomnia. As we are learning more and more about the importance of sleep, especially for brain health, it is pretty frustrating to have sleeping issues with PD. I suffer from both types of insomnia, trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. It stresses me out because I know how sleep deprivation can worsen symptoms and make medication less effective. I recently started using an app called Rise that tracks my sleep but also pretty accurately predicts my energy levels during the day and my ideal bedtime and wake time. My goal is to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night, but currently my avarage is 5 ½ hours. 🥱
